November 21, 2006

We have completed the second day of our relief effort trip; and what a blessing this day has been!! We have sown hope into the lives of a few of the people in the Pascagoula, MS area. We have made wonderful new friends and been truly blessed to enjoy the hospitality of the workers here at VanCleave United Methodist Church!! They have been wonderful hosts and hostesses and we have sincerely enjoyed meeting them, working with them, sharing our faith with them and quickly becoming fast friends.

The work remaining in the gulf region is staggering! The team has already asked when we can come back again!

Nov 20, 2006

We spent our first day on the job sites today. The team broke up into four separate groups on separate jobs. The jobs ranged from sheetrocking to roofing, to finish work to ceramic tile. It is amazing to drive around parts of the area and things look so normal. Until you pull up in the driveway and open the front door to a house with nothing in it but stud walls. Or, you see the trailer parked on the front lawn and you realize the family has been living in that trailer for 15 months now and their home may or may not be anywhere near to liveable again.

The bonding amongst our team members continues. Everyone is getting along fabulously and getting to know each other better. A trip such as this is such a positive for long-term relationships and knowing each other.

We are blessed to be representing our church in this way. No matter what we do, or who we meet, we are constantly reminded that all we do is because of Jesus.

Our team departed Macon at 8:00am this morning. We had an uneventful and sometimes raucous trip through Alabama here to Mississippi. The team members melded excellently and all enjoyed the activities of the young men on the trip with us! God is blessing our trip from the onset. We were welcomed in Mississippi at a welcome center on the interstate by some wonderful representatives of the state. They welcomed us warmly, particularly when they learned why we were here.

We drove to Bay St. Louis for the benefit of those who were here last year and for others to develop an appreciation for what has happened here. We arrived at VanCleave MS United Methodist Church at about 5:15pm. We were WARMLY welcomed by the staff members from Camp Hope. We were truly made to feel at home as we enjoyed a wonderful evening meal and shared converation and God.

The tone for a short devotional time was set by Lois as she thanked us all for responding to God's prompting for us to come to Mississippi. There was a sweet sense of God's presence in all that was happening and we knew we were here for His purpose.

The facilities are great and we soon settled in for a much needed rest.

Relief Trip 2006,

Well, it's been almost a year since we posted to this blog. We're in the final stages putting together another trip to the Gulf. This year we're going to VanCleve, MS. Right now, we have 20 volunteers who've expressed a desire to go to work. We will depart Macon, GA on Sunday, Nov 19, 2006 at 6:00am from the parking lot of Harvest Cathedral church on Rocky Creek Road. We will return to Macon on Wed, Nov 22 at approximately 5:00 pm.

We've got an organizational meeting scheduled for Wed, Nov 1, 2006 at 6:30 pm in classroom #1 at the church. Please try to be there as we are now three weeks out from the trip and we need to finalize preparations.

If you have questions, please email Ken Hanson from this blog site.

A full day of work

Today we spilt up into two groups. One group cleared two lots with chainsaws and bobcats and the other "mucked out" a house. Another church came today and brought thanksgiving dinner for the community and volunteers. So it was nice to come back to "camp" and have dinner waiting.

This is the mucking crew

It's a bit hard to tell, but this is a back street. All the stuff is what is left of the houses.
